I think if parents knew what goes on at show and tell, they would keep their kids home that day. One time a little girl passed out hankies and with a sob in her throat shared that "last week, we found a girl on the side of the road." She forgot some of the story, like that the girl was looking with her parents for her lost dog. I have had kids tell us about new babies coming to their family, sometimes a true story, sometimes not. Once a kid told the class that he was so excited cuz his dad was getting out of jail. Of course he was. Yesterday I had a good one. A student brought bait and told the class how to bait a hook. Yes, she brought the hook. Luckily, she didn't really do it, but she did say, "and you have to put it right here...just behind the dark part of the head."
This is probably why, when we began reading Charlotte's Web and we were discussing that sometimes farmers really do have to get rid of their runts, and I asked the class, "What do you think Fern might do if her dad does say he will kill the baby pig," (and I was expecting that since they have all seen both movies--that the response might be that she won't let him, and that the pig will grow up and become famous and make friends with a spider) ...that I was so tickled when a girl said matter of factly, "they will eat it." Yes, another reason I love second graders.
